By now nearly everyone you know is on Facebook. With nearly 175 million users and thousands adding all the time it appears that this will be the place where people will live their online lives. Everything you do is easy and accessable to all of your friends. This is both a blessing and a curse. Its great because you can share with people what is going on in your life down to the most minute of details. However this comes with a pretty big price. As Facebook evovles into a more and more ubiquitous tool with everyone being on it not just the drunken college students your personal information is readily available. Now with the privacy settings you can control who sees what, but that isn't the only issue. You only have one profile for everyone no matter what type of "friend" they are. You only get one profile picture, one wall, one of everything. This means that when people go to your profile who have been restricted to view only certain things their view of you is extremely limited. And this fact is very well known, people know what a normal profile should look like, so if you are only sharing basic information they will know and see that you are hiding things. Here in lies Facebook's dilemma.

Now I know there are professional social networking sites like LinkedIn and Plaxo but you have to manage those as well. So now you have to have at least 2 different online lives to manage. In this age of rapid development why can't you have everything on one site. Be able to have two profiles on Facebook that are managed by one login. Create the fun, crazy friends only profile and share that with your friends, but also have your professional life in Facebook without the fear that something might slip through your privacy settings and your boss will see that embarrassing picture of you drunk, dancing on the bar. There are apps already developed that create professional profiles in Facebook but these are extremely limited and don't actually do what they say.

I know its not up to me but that would be an amazing growth step for Facebook if they were able to leverage it as a place where people could be extremely professional and extremely fun and care free.
